Robert C Aber, MD, MACP

Robert "Bob" Aber passed away at home on Friday, December 1, 2023 at the age of 80. Born on July 2, 1943 in Easton, PA, he was a 1961 graduate of Wilson Area High School (Easton, PA), a 1965 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, where he co-captained the lacrosse team his senior year, and a 1970 graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine. After medical school Bob completed a medical residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA. His time at MGH was split by 2 years of service with the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the United States Public Health Service at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. Following completion of his fellowship in 1976, Bob took an academic position at Penn State's College of Medicine in Hershey, PA and spent his entire career, from which he was not yet retired, at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.

Bob's career in Hershey was built around a strong desire to serve and nurture others - as a physician, colleague, teacher and mentor - and to leave the world a better place than he found it. With this life mission in mind, he set off making a significant impact on the Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine. When Bob arrived in Hershey he became the first adult infectious diseases physician in central PA and went on to found and develop the Division of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at the Hershey Medical Center. He held various Deanships within the College of Medicine and eventually became the Chair of the Department of Medicine, a position he held from 2002-2018. Bob was named the first recipient of the Dr. C. McCollister and Nancy L. Evarts Chair in Medical Education in 1998, won numerous teaching awards over the years and was honored with a Central PA Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Healthcare Hero award in 2021. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and a recipient of Mastership in the American College of Physicians.

Everyone who knew Bob would agree that he was a revered member of the communities in which he belonged. His integrity and values never wavered, his communication style was open and honest, he was blessed with strong mentorship and leadership qualities and a keen ability to use fair and prudent judgment in his decision making. Bob valued people and their time, had a quiet sense of humor, was a great listener, advice giver, and teacher, an avid reader, and a lifelong learner. He was loved and admired dearly by his family and friends and will live on in our hearts forever.

Despite all of Bob's career accomplishments, his most cherished roles in life were as husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and great-uncle. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 58 years, Karen; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Steve Korbly (Acton, MA); his grandchildren, Isabella, Adriana, Owen and Marina Korbly; his brother-in-law, Michael Jones, and wife, Alison (Pen Argyl, PA); his nieces, Tara Sysko and husband, Matt (Nazareth, PA), and Molly Ruiz and husband, Miguel (Annville, PA); his nephews, Marc Aber (Meridian, ID) and Ben Jones and wife, Kelsey (McKinney, TX); his great-nieces, Natalie Sysko and Maggie Aber; and his great-nephews, Dante Aber, Carson Sysko, Preston Aber, and William Jones; he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's memory to support the Dr. Robert C. and Karen A. Aber Scholarship at Penn State College of Medicine.

Gifts should be made payable to Penn State and mailed to University Development, PO Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033 or made online at https://engage.pennstatehealth.org/aber
