October 10, 1929
James Watt DeVore, son of Joshua and Caroline DeVore, was born in Hardin County, Ohio, August 16, 1855 and passed away at his home in Massena, Iowa, Wednesday, October 2, 1929 at the age of 74 years, 1 month, and 16 days.
He came to Iowa when fifteen years old where he lived on a farm until 1912 when he moved to Massena, where he took an active part in the civic affairs of the town serving as both mayor, and councilman for a number of terms.
November 1, 1866 he was married to Mary Matilda Cline. To this union were born seven children, four boys, and three girls: Julia Caroline Reichardt and Joshua DeVore, deceased, and the living children, William Franklin, Ethel Thompson, Guy Allen, Harrison Hayes, and Mellie Parkinson. Besides these, he leaves to mourn his passing a kind and loving wife, twenty-nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Also, one living brother, who resides in Oklahoma, and a host of other relatives and friends, who always found him a friend in time of need. It has often been said of him that he never passed a person without a smile and word of greeting. Thus a good man has passed from our community to be greatly missed by those who loved and admired him.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 5 at Massena at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Warden of the Massena Baptist church. Interment was made in Victoria cemetery.
