Sarah Ann Stanley was born in Boston, Green County, Indiana, May 17, 1848. Orphaned at the age of 14 she came to Sac County, Iowa to live with a relative, travelling overland in a covered wagon. Later she lived with an elder sister near the site of what is now Battle Creek, Iowa.
On October 31, 1867, when she was 19 years of age, she was united in marriage to John M. Yockey. The couple then came to Smithland to make their home. They have lived in or near Smithland ever since- 68 years.
To this union were born seven children. One, a son, died in infancy. Her husband died June 17, 1931, and one son, Casper died September 7, 1934. The five children surviving are Mrs. Lillian Flathers of Correctionville, Monroe Yockey, Mrs. Ella Corey, Mrs. Margaret Cory and John L. Yockey, all of Smithland.
