The following information was written for me by my father some years
ago. It concerns the maternal side of his family, who were the Lillys'
and who originated in Lisle, France. The time was 1817.
Joseph Lilly settled in WV, on land that was the farm of Carl Johnson Martin, now owned by Billy Jo Martin. It is my understanding that
it was a land grant from the King of England and has remained in the
family's possession throughout the years.
When Joseph Lilly arrived there was nothing but wilderness and not
an acre of land land cleared for miles. He cleared and built a large log
house. Other than being a farmer, he was a famous bear hunter and a
primitive Baptist preacher. At one time, he went into a cave with a flink
lock rifle and a knife, with pitch pine for light and killed a bear. He
was 80 when he died and his wife was 97 when she died. Her name was
Elizabeth Thompson Lilly. Nineteen children were born to this family, one
was Johnson Keatley Lilly. Courtesty Aunt Bun (Muriel Martin Denari).
