Mary Grubb, daughter of Emeline (née Holloway) and William W. Grubb, was born on 3 February 1869 in Fairfield Township, Madison County, Ohio. Her father was a Civil War veteran employed as a laborer. By 1880, the Grubb family had relocated to Dudley Township, Hardin County, Ohio, and by 1890 had returned to Fairfield Township.

Mary Grubb and "Eka Akins" (Alexander Agins) were married on 19 July 1890 in Madison County. The couple, who eventually became the parents of eight children, were in 1900 farming in neighboring Franklin County, Ohio. By 1910, the Agins family had returned to Fairfield Township, and resided in the village of Big Plain, where Alexander Agins was a barber. He died in 1939. Mary Agins remained in Big Plain, and was enumerated there from 1930 through 1950.

Mary Agins, a resident of Big Plain, died on 1 March 1953 in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital after breaking her hip. "Surviving are three sons, C. L. Agins of Los Angeles, Roy of Columbus, and Leonard of Big Plain; two daughters, Mrs. Frank [Edyth] Stewart of Columbus and Mrs. Lester [Loretta] Castro of London; two brothers, W. D.
