Lee was born Leroy Manford Agan on 23 April 1932 in Salem, Indiana to Mary Irene Bell Busick and Charles Wilson Agan. After his mother died when he was only four years of age, he was adopted by Arthur Wilcoxen and his wife Elizabeth Deremiah Wilcoxen and his name was changed to Lee Anthony Wilcoxen. After Elizabeth's death in 1964, Arthur married her sister Emma Deremiah Stuart Wilcoxen, who is also listed as Lee's mother. He grew up in Indiana but later moved to Oklahoma.
