Marie Esther Lafontaine was born on 25 Jul 1831 in Indiana. She was christened on 25 Sep 1832 in Vincennes, Indiana. Esther, as she was known, was the daughter of Francis Topeah Lafontaine and Catherine "Cates" Pocongoquah Richardville. Her father was the civil Chief of the Miami tribe at the time many of the tribal members were removed to Lykins (now Miami) County, Kansas territory. Esther's mother was the daughter of Chief Jean-Baptiste Richardville, civil chief of the Miami Tribe.

Esther married John Zahn on 12 Apr 1850 in Huntington County, Indiana. John, a native of Germany, was a shoemaker. The family was living in Huntington County when the 1860 and 1870 censuses were collected. In 1860, their children George and Elizabeth were living in the home. In 1870, their children, George, Francis, and Matilda, were living in the home. John died about 1870 in Indiana.

Sometime after 1870, Esther moved to Miami County, Kansas.

Mrs. Esther Zahn married George Washington in Feb 1878 . The marriage was recorded in the office of Judge Robinson, Paola, Miami County, Kansas.

OBITUARY
Mrs. Esther Washington, an estimable Miami Indian woman, died on Friday of last week at her home in Fontana, Kan. She was the wife of George Wah-pe pin zah, and mother of George and Frances Zahn. Her age was 49 years. The funeral was held last Saturday, being largely attended, the business houses of Fontana closing in respect to her memory.

The location of Esther's burial was not named in the obituary. It is possible that she was buried in the Fontana, Kansas, cemetery, where her second husband, George Washington, and her brother, Louis Lafontaine were buried.
