The headstone for Josephine Richey records Mar 1869 as her birth; the 1900 census states that she was born Jul 1868.

Josephine's father (Jesse Richey) was a Private, Co. C (Assumption Creoles), 26th Louisiana Infantry. Her mother was Mary Zoe Rachal.

The Richey Family goes back a long way in Louisiana and Mississippi. They were present in the Natchez and Woodville area during Spanish rule before coming over to the Opelousas District where Jesse Richey was born and baptized. The Rachals go back even further. Corp. Pierre Rachal dit St. Denis came over to La Mobile, Capitol of Louisiana around about 1716. He is behind both lines of Rachals that Mary Zoe (Rachal) Richey is descended from.
