The Springdale News from The Harrison Republican
July 7, 1911

Last Friday at the Coker Hollow mine, in this county, there occurred the worst accident known to this district, in which two men were killed. Judge D.W. Cave and his son-in-law, Mr. Rogers of Pittsburg, Kan, principal owner of the mine, together with the ground foremen, John Brown, went down in the mine to make an examination. A few minutes after entering the drift a boulder, weighting perhaps a ton, fell from the roof, catching Brown fairly, mashing his life out in an instant.

Rogers, who was just behind him, dodged back but the rock caught one foot, pinioning him as if in a vice, and it was some time before he could be removed to town.

Dr. Kirby was summoned from here, who together with Dr. Taylor of Zinc, after examining the foot, which seemingly had every bone in it broken, decided that an operation was necessary and the foot was taken off just above the ankle. He was very weak from the loss of blood and suffering and could not rally and he died at eight o'clock the next morning.

Judge Cave who was just
behind Mr. Rogers received a few bruises but nothing serious.

Thanks to Jennifer Horner for the Obit.
