Jacob was the son of William and Hannah (Resides) Brower. He grew up in Centre County, Pennsylvania. On 25 Dec 1852 he married Rebecca Lucas daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Shirk) Lucas.
Jacob and Rebecca had five children: Charles, Lucy, James, Clara and Alice.
He enlisted in Co. I, 51st Pennsylvania Regiment on 27 Sep 1864 and mustered out on 2 Jun 1865.
