John Swan was the son of John and Elizabeth LUCAS Swan. In 1767, Thomas Gist led a party of Maryland and Virginia people to the Tenmile Country of western Pennsylvania to settle. Included in the party were the families of Swan, Henry Van Metre, James Hughes, Hiller, and O'Neal. The families settled close together between the Tenmile and Muddy Creek. John Swan III and Elizabeth Van Metre married two years later in 1769. She was the daughter of Jacob and Leticia STROUD/Strode Van Metre. John Swan III died while on the way to Kentucky in about 1782-83. John and his family along with his wife's Van Metre family members were floating downriver of the Ohio to take up land in Kentucky. When a short distance below Fort Pitt past where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together creating the Ohio River, the following occurred. "While John Swan was fast asleep on the flat boat with his young daughter in his arms, he was shot through the breast by an Indian on the shore." Leckey, 1977. There ensued a firefight with no one else injured. In his will, dated 12 Sept 1780, John Swan, III mentions his wife, Elizabeth, children John, Joel, Elizabeth and Letitia. A son, Thomas, was born posthumously. The widow, her father, Jacob Van Metre and John's uncle, Richard Swan, were named executors. Sisters of the widow: Mary Hinton, Rebecca Rollins and Margaret Haycroft. They were in the party on the way to the Severn Valley in Kentucky. The Severn Valley is in Hardin County. The will was probated in Hardin County in 1783. It is most likely that John Swan III was buried somewhere along the Ohio River.
