George Stagner is the son of John Stagner who is the son of Johann Bernhardt (John Barney) Stagner of Rowan County, North Carolina. In his youth and early adult years, George lived in the Third and Fourth Creek forks of the South Yadkin River in Rowan County. On 16 March 1793, he married Sarah Hellard (Hillard), the daughter of Henry Hellard, in Rowan County. They would have three children, a son and two daughters. After Sarah's death, George married Catherine Hendricks, the daughter of James Hendricks, on 1 June 1805. The exact number of their surviving children isn't known, but could be as high as ten. George and Catherine left Rowan County, NC for Warren (later Simpson) County, KY in 1806. It is not known for certain that George is buried in Blackjack Cemetery, but it is just up the road from the homestead of his eldest son, John Stagner, on the Lick Fork of Drakes Creek and it is the cemetery where his sister, Sarah "Sally" (Stagner) Hendricks, and his daughter, Mary Frances "Fannie" (Stagner) Huffines are buried.
