Sylva - Mattie Cogdill Coggins, 78, of Carriage Lane, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She retired from Buster Brown as a machine operator and was the hostess of McDonalds in Sylva; member of Locust Field Baptist Church; daughter of the late Same E. and Nettie Mathis Cogdill; preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Jean Cogdill and Edith Haskett; one brother, Vernon Cogdill; two infant sisters and one infant brother.

Surviving is her husband of 57 years, Daniel E. Coggins; one daughter and son in law, Shirley and Ken Beck, of Sylva; one son, Bruce and Mary Sue Coggins, of Sylva; two sisters, Barbara Owen, of Sylva and Betty Brown, of Lake Junaluska; one brother, George Cogdill, of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Scotty and Brandon Coggins, Aron and Haley Beck; three great-grandchildren, Kassidy Kaleb and Austin Coggins; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Locust Field Baptist Church, with the Rev's. Jason Buchanan and Charles Carnes officiating. Burial, Cogdill-Henry Cemetery.
