Wilbur L. Batchelder, 95, died Friday, October 27, 2023, at Homestead Assisted Living in Garden City, Kansas. He was born December 11, 1927, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Guy & Pauline (Brock) Batchelder.
Wilbur grew up in Garden City where he attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School. Wilbur began his working career in the oil fields around Garden City. In 1961, he moved to Venice, California where he worked with his brother in construction. He later moved to Ulysses, Kansas in the mid 1980's and then moved back to Garden City in 2003. He has lived in Garden City since. After moving back to Garden City, Wilbur worked as a driver for various car dealerships. He loved to spend his time collecting coins, watching western movies, bird watching, and taking care of his vegetable and flower gardens.
Survivors include four children Roger Batchelder of Wichita, Kansas; Carol Dick of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Janet & husband Sam Hands of Garden City, Kansas; and Helen Batchelder of Garden City, Kansas; 8 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Wilbur is preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers Henry, Guy, Milo, Ted, & Alva; and 5 sisters; Pauline, Lottie, Emma, Mary, & Betty.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with Von Hunn officiating. Visitation hours are from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. to Noon on Tuesday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
