CHRISTIAN RENSPIE (RENSPIES, ROENSPIES)
Original name for generations was ROENSPIES. He changed the spelling twice. First to RENSPIES and then finally to RENSPIE. This left family members with several three different spellings and some hurt feelings since they did not all want to change.

He was born in 1828 in Zippnow, Prussia which is now in Poland close to the Tyrol Alps and called Sypniewo. They considered themselves German and spoke German. Border wars, political wars, religious wars, you name it went on in that region for hundreds of years he would not be a part of that, and he immigrated to the US at the age of 16 or 17 to avoid the draft into Bavarian Army. He for some as yet unknown reason settled in Michigan City Indiana and never left.

He married to Augusta Schenke in the old country of Prussia. She came from Poznan, Prussia, (now also in Poland), not far from his hometown Zippnow. They both spoke German. Christian worked at the Haskell and Barker Freight Car Factory in Michigan City, Indiana as an iron worker. He forged the freight car wheels for the train cars. The factory occupied over 100 acres. (picture on right)

He died at work of a cerebral hemorrhage. Out of great respect for him, his forge remained idle for many years as a memorial to his life and to the fine skill as an iron worker he had been there.

He had two previous marriages. Sadly, both wives died in childbirth I believe.
