Parents: Nicholas and Emeline Davis Carney. Buried in an unmarked grave in Old Barger Cemetery, Fentress Co., TN. She could not read or write. She was married numerous times and may be the mother of several Carney children that we haven't matched to a father.

James Hoover. Married prior to 1870. Divorced Dec 29, 1871 per Dec Term Fentress Co. Court Minutes.

? Tucker. On 22 Sep 1898 her brother Summers Van Buren Carney testified that she is Margaret Tucker.

Dec 1871: Fentress Co. Court Minutes:

Margaret Hoover vs James Hoover. Divorce. Mother granted custody of infant child.


May 1897: Fentress Co. Court Minutes dated May, 1897, page 362.  

On motion it appeared to the Court that Earney Carney Alias Jake Carney is a minor of 12 years old and an illegitimate child of Margaret Carney and it appeared to the Court that said Margaret Carney took said Earney Carney to the poorhouse of Fentress County and left him and that she is unable to care for said Child and it also appeared to the Court that she is a woman of bad character and the keeper of a House of ill-fame and that said Earney Carney is too small to earn a support by his own labor and that he has no property.  It is ordered by the Court that said Earney Carney be bound to E. J. Williams of Fentress County until he is 21 years old and who appeared in open court and acknowledged himself indebted to the State of Tennessee for the use of Earney Carney in the sum of five Hundred Dollars with O. C. Conatser as Secty, To be void if the said E. J. Williams shall furnish the said Earney Carney with food shelter and clothing until he is 21 years old and shall teach him to read and write and cipher as for as the rule of three and on his arrival at the age of 21 years give to the said Earney Carney a good horse bridal and saddle and $20.00 cash and a suit of new clothes, otherwise to remain the full force and effect.  It is ordered that the custody of said Earney Carney be given to E. J. Williams until he arrives at the age of 21 years it appearing to the Court that Margaret Carney had verbal notice of the application to bind said Earney Carney. [Janice B. Lee, Jamestown, TN, a descendant of E.J. Williams] [This Jake Carney married Maude Thornhill and they lived in Daviess, Co. KY. They are buried in Hawk Cemetery, Deleware Co. IN]
