Cankton - Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 28, 2023 at a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church for Karleen Barry, age 90, the former Karleen Guilbeau, who passed away Monday, October 23, 2023 at her residence in Sunset.

Interment will be in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau.

A native of Cankton and resident of Sunset, Karleen lived a life of exuberance. In 1948, as a freshman at Sunset High School, she became a spokesperson for Cajun Culture when she adopted her life stage name and portrayed Madam Sauce Piquante at the 1st National Convention of the Future Homemakers of America in Kansas City, MO. She would later serve as National Vice President of that organization. She continued to perform Cajun humor and storytelling, such as the Cajun Night Before Christmas, that led to many events from local radio to national television, even publishing a Cajun cookbook. While attending Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, she was a member of the Red Jackets spirit squad and would earn a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics and later a Master's Degree in Education. She began her working career with LSU Sweet Potato Research Station in Chase, LA. She loved children and impacted the lives of many students during her career as a kindergarten – 2nd grade teacher at Sunset Elementary School. Karleen was also a dedicated parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, where she was a catechism teacher for many years. A devout Catholic, she was a member of the Ladies Altar Society at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winnsboro, LA until her family moved to Sunset in 1969. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to conventions with the Yambalee Association and making memories on family vacations. She loved cooking and doing lots and lots of babysitting of her grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Survivors include her five sons, Robert Barry, III and his wife, Sheila, of Sunset; Dr. Michael D. Barry of Grand Coteau; Karl Barry and his wife, Karen, of Lafayette; Dr. Mark Barry of Grand Coteau; and Dr. Tim Barry and his wife, Cathy, of Lafayette; two daughters, D'Ann Plauche and her husband, Jery, of Lafayette; and Linda B. Player and her husband, Robert "Baye", of Hingham, MA; one daughter-in-law, Patricia "Peachie" Barry of Grand Coteau; sixteen grandchildren, Hope Barry Marks (James), Robin Barry-Olivier, Lilly Mestayer Hayes (BJ), Olivia Pilar Barry, Julia Angelle Barry, Lauren Barry Donadieu (Robert), Anne Camille Barry, Emily Marie Barry, Jeanne Michelle Barry, Amanda Barry Benoit (Harry), Tucker Barry (Rachel), Matthew Barry, Adam Barry, Robert Preston "Robbie" Barry, Sam Plauche' (Victoria), and John Robert "Jack" Plauche'; eight great grandchildren; McKinley Marks, Emme Marks, Addisyn Olivier, Wyatt Olivier, Sawyer Oliver, Jude Hayes, Eleanor Hayes, and Cecile "CC" Hayes; two great-great grandchildren, Rhett Marks and Ahni Melancon; one sister, Janelle Guilbeau Broussard and husband, Elmo Bruce" of Cankton; one step-brother, Edwin "Ed" Roy of Lafayette and wife, Shelley Collins; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of sixty-six years, Dr. Joseph Robert Barry Jr. of Sunset; one son, Dr. Charles P. Barry; her parents, Preston Guilbeau and the former Beatrice Guidroz, and step-father, Cyrus Roy.

A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Barry, Adam Barry, Robbie Barry, Sam Plauche, Jack Plauche; and Dr. Tim Barry. Readers will be Hope Barry Marks and Olivia Pilar Barry. Gift bearers will be D'Ann Barry Plauche' and Linda Barry Player. Musical selections will be provided by Charlotte Jagneaux, accompanied by Phyllis Simar on the organ.

The family would like to express their deep thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Karleen's caregivers for their long-term dedication and loving care and St. Joseph's Hospice.
