Mary Sugg was the wife of Lemuel Sugg, Sr. When Lemuel Sugg Sr. died, Mary Sugg was appointed guardian of the minor children, Lemuel, Jr., Noah and Reading. On Sept. 1, 1792, Lemuel Jr., now being of age, was appointed guardian of his younger brother, Reading.

On a Deed dated 02 November 1804, Reading Sugg was the son of Mary Sugg, widow: Edgecombe County, NC, Deed Book 11, page 623, date of deed 2 Nov 180 4, date recorded Nov. Ct. 1806, Mary Sugg, widow of Edge. Co. to Reding Sugg, residence not stated, for good will love and affection I have for my son Reding Sugg and the things he has done for me, a tract of land on the south side of Tar River on the north side of Bakers Mill Creek beginning at a hickory in Starling Wallers line of the land he bought of Blake Baker then along said line Mary Sugg line to a pine a corner then along Nathaniel Bilberrys and William Wilkins line to a pine in Wilkins line then along Blake Bakers line to his mill creek then down said creek to the ould road then up said road to the beginning, containing 223 acres, signed Mary Sugg, wit. Starling Waller. Abstracted from Db, RD, 4-21-00.

From visit to Greenwood Cemetery, Tarboro, N C, in June 1995: In the same family plot as Reading Sugg is a gravestone for "Mother. Mary Sugg. Died March 5, 1824, aged 76 years. Her virtues and piety the only ornaments she cultivated."
