Burdette Francis Cox, age 105, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, passed away October 13, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society in Osceola.
Burdette was born November 26, 1917 in Grant, Nebraska to Elmer Ross and Nettie Martha (Francis) Cox.
He attended school in Grant and graduated from Perkins High School in 1936. After graduating he worked as a farmhand for his uncle Lawrence Cox near Elsie, NE.
Burdette enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 25, 1941 where he was was deployed to Europe. He was part of the 401st Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, as a armourer where he loaded bombs onto the planes. He received his honorable discharge on July 12, 1945. Burdette was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, The American Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge during his time in the Army Air Corps.
After returning home from the service Burdette worked as a farmhand for his brother-in-law in Holyoke, Colorado for a very short time. He then began a 40 plus year career with the United States Post Office, first as a mail sorter on a train between Omaha and Denver, then at the Omaha Postal Distribution Center. He retired in 1980.
Burdette eventually moved to Stromsburg to be closer to his youngest sister. On September 28, 2023 he moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Osceola where he resided until his passing.
He was a member of the Stromsburg American Legion.
He enjoyed gardening, going to baseball games, reading, walking and square dancing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Floyd and Gene; sisters Kathryn Ivers, Dorothy Newth, Lorelie Cox; sister-in-law Penny Cox; brothers-in-law Bill Ivers, Henry Newth and Jack Henthorn.
