Ruthie Inez Phillips, age 78, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

She was born in Rogers County, OK on December 16, 1944 to Claude Oliver Bowman and Ruth Rowena James Bowman and was raised in Vinita, OK. She graduated from Ewing Halsell High in 1963. Inez studied at the University of Denver, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Central State University and earned her Master's degree of Science in Secondary Education from Oklahoma State University in 1975. She taught English at Manford High School from 1968-1973. She then taught in Stillwater, OK for 2 years before the family moved to Oklahoma City in 1976 and she began teaching English at Harrah High School in the same year. She then taught remedial reading for Harrah Public Schools for grades 3rd-5th at Russell Babb Elementary and grades 1st-2nd at Clara Reynolds Elementary before retiring in 2008. She greatly enjoyed her memberships and involvement in the Kappa Alpha Psi and the Oklahoma Writers' Federation, Inc

Inez was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Martha Mason and her brother Willard Bowman.

Inez is survived by her brother Richard Bowman; daughter Wendy Newell; son Brian Phillips and his wife Michelle; grandchildren Samantha and Alexander. Clay Phillips and his wife Cassie with their children: Conner, Caleb, Calvin and Claire.

We would love to visit and share stories with all who knew her. Mom was one of the most creative people we knew. Some of you probably even received one of her knitting projects or maybe even a hand painted postcard. If so, our family would be delighted for you to bring that item and "show-and-tell" your special memory. We would also like to invite mom's friends to share any fun memories with us after her memorial service during the reception.

Mom touched so many lives. She was a teacher, a writer, an artist, and certainly a charitable person. She loved her family, friends, and her students dearly. Mom will be missed by many souls. We have lost a good person. However, we must remind ourselves that just because she is gone, does not mean she will be forgotten any time soon.

A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the Bill Merritt Funeral Home located at 6201 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.
