Roger W. Mays
June 22, 1949 ~ October 5, 2023 (age 74)

Roger Wayne Mays, 74, of Petoskey, died October 5, 2023, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

Roger was born on June 22, 1949, the son of Cecil and Helen (Tomlin) Mays, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He lived there until moving to Petoskey at age 15. Roger was a member of the 1967 graduating class from Petoskey High School. He obtained an associate degree from North Central Michigan College.

He proudly joined the United States Army and served two tours in Vietnam from 1968-1971. His military service was very important to Roger and something he carried throughout the rest of his life.

On May 24, 1986, he married Judy (Rightenburg) Schrage. Roger loved Judy very much and raised her sons as his own.

He owned and operated Roger's Auto for over 40 years. He loved golfing, hunting, and trips to the Casino. Roger's happy place was the hunting cabin in the Upper Peninsula. He looked forward to hunting with his sons every year.

Roger was very active in the VFW post 2051 and served as Quartermaster for 40 years, and the American Legion Post 194. He also served as the VFW Department of Michigan State Commander from 2005-2006.

Roger was the type of person to have strong opinions on most anything. There was very little gray area with him; you knew exactly where you stood with him. One thing that was certain, he loved his family fiercely.

He is survived by his wife Judy Mays of Petoskey; sons, Rodney Mays of Petoskey, Craig (Bridget) Schrage of Petoskey, BJ (Sherry) Schrage of Petoskey, Adam (fiancée Lori Hopp) Schrage of Gaylord, and Eric (fiancée Lisa De La Cruz) Schrage of Alanson; grandchildren, Madelyn, Marlee, Luke, Trent, Derek, Courtney, Tylor, Mason and Dylan; great-grandchildren, Genesis, Owen, and Bentley; his sister Jean (John) Johnson of Crozet, Virginia; Terry (Wayne) Anderson of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation at Trinity Missionary Church on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will be the following day, Oct. 13, 2023, at Trinity Missionary Church (600 Division Rd, Petoskey) at 11:00 a.m. with a one-hour visitation prior. Burial will take place immediately following at Greenwood Cemetery.
