Nobel Laureate Poet. She was best known for her award-winning poetry that confronted the horrible, the difficult, and the painful and was characterized by insight and a severe lyricism. After attending Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, and Columbia University in New York City, she taught poetry at numerous colleges and universities, including Harvard and Yale. In 1968, she put together her first collection of poetry "Firstborn," which used a variety of first-person personas, all disaffected or angry. Her later work included such titles as "The House on Marshland," "Descending Figure," "The Triumph of Achilles," "Ararat," "The Wild Iris," "Averno," and "A Village Life." She earned many awards and honors for her poetry including the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2020. She also was the Poet Laureate of the United States in 2003 - 2004.
