GALESBURG - Lowell R. Yates, 86, 207 Lincoln St., died at 5:39 a.m. Tuesday (April 26, 2005) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Knoxville, the son of William H. and Julia G. Parsons Yates. He married Betty Dixon on Aug. 29, 1941, in Galesburg. Surviving is his wife; a son, Roger (and Carleen) Yates, Carpentersville; a daughter, Dottie (and Jack) Frame, Elmwood; a brother, Wendell Yates, Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by three sisters.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1936. He served in the Army for three years during World War II, stationed in Hawaii.
He was a tool and die engineer at Rowe Manufacturing Co. for 41 years, retiring in August 1980. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. He was a self-taught, accomplished artist, photographer, and carpenter, winning many awards.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Revs. Scott Grulke and Marilyn Anell officiating. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a presentation of the flag by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
