Gary Louis LaVoie was born in Hastings, NE to Albert and Dena (Theis) LaVoie October 27, 1936. He grew up in Campbell, NE. He went to boarding school in Canyon City, CO for a year and graduated from Campbell High School. After high school graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska majoring in Music and minoring in English and Social Studies. He was a member of the Cornhusker Marching Band while in college and remained an avid Husker Fan for the rest of his life. He graduated June 7, 1958 and the following week he married Sally Dwinell LaVoie. They spent the first 2 years of married life in Blue Hill, Nebraska where Gary taught high school music.

After a move to California, he taught music for Morongo Unified School District for the next 8 years and lived in Twentynine Palms, he was president of Community Concerts, Grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, directed the church choir and had a Sunday afternoon radio show. He then taught music for the Glendale Unified School District for the rest of his career. Most of the time he was the high school instrumental music teacher at Crescenta Valley High School.

He took an eight-year break from teaching in California. He and his family moved to Kearney, Nebraska to be close to aging family members. He taught music there for 2 years and then decided to enter the business world and open Mister Donut Stores in Kearney and later Grand Island.

He closed those stores and returned to his teaching career at Crescenta Valley High School. He had band, orchestra, jazz band and guitar classes. His groups won many excellent and superior ratings at contests. He took those groups on many interesting bus trips and was in the Rose Bowl Parade three times.

Gary loved the camping life! He did some tent camping, but mostly liked to be the captain of the RV. He also was an avid HAM radio enthusiast for many years. At times he had other interests like building electronics and photography.

He is survived by his wife; children Jerry (Maryann), Jean Sorensen, Steve (Laurie), Ann Cooper (Bryan), ten grandchildren and Five great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Aimee.

Visitation will be Friday, October 13, 2023 at Butherus Maser & Love Funeral home, 4040 A Street. 10am to 8pm with a Rosary at 6:30pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 10:00am at St Joseph Catholic Church, 1940 South 77th Street followed by a burial at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials to Mass for the Shut-ins.
