BALES M CAMPBELL

All through the 19th century and well on into the 20th this country's great growth in population provided innumerable opportunities for those who had the foresightedness, thrift and industry to take advantage if them.

In particular, the expansion of industrial cities like Youngstown offered such opportunities, and Bales M Campbell was one of the men with the qualities needed to capitalize them.

Mr. Campbell was one of the very first, if not the first, of those who saw the possibilities in developing the land south of the Mahoning as a residence district for the growing industrial center. For many years he was one of the leaders in an evolution which made that section such a center of population that a great high school - South High - ultimately was built on the site of his old home.

Mr. Campbell's mind was no one track affair. While he joined in real estate companies to sell land for homes, he organized lumber companies to sell the material for houses, and banks to lend the money.

It is note-worthy that while such men as Mr. Campbell are able to make the most of their opportunities, they also help to build the city. Their work is a sort of partnership with the community, each receiving a benefit. The means and influence they gain may be used to the community's profit in other matters than business, as Mr. Campbell's service to the South Side Park, the Playground Association, the South Side Library and the hospitals demonstrated

Even near the close of his long life, after he had been disabled by the arthritis which laid a heavy burden on his declining years, he was able to render useful service tin the re-opening of the City Trust & Savings Bank.

That was Mr. Campbell's last opportunity. His work really was done with the development and the improvement of the South Side. Probably he would not have wished to survive the accident which led to his death, for it would have left him bedridden, an intolerable condition for a personality so rugged, independent and active.
