He was severely wounded on 16 May 1864 in Drewry's Bluff, Virginia. He mustered out 14 Jun 1864 in Concord NH, discharged due to disability. He applied for his Civil War Pension on 19 Aug 1865.

On the 1880 US Census of Wentworth NH, Lyman Kimball was a 57 year old farmer. He was living with his wife Sarah Kimball (age 56). Sarah died in 1887.
His gravestone is in the same lot as the gravestones of two wives, Mary A. Kimball, who died in 1853, and Sarah B. Kimball, per the inscriptions on their stones.
He married Elsena/Eleanor M. (Whitcher) Baily on 29 Nov 1888 in Meredith NH. They were both widowed. This record lists this as their second marriages. She applied as his widow for his Civil War Pension on 6 Sep 1890.
Lyman died of malaria in 1890.
