SUMTER, S.C. — Roscoe Ozwill Ratliff Sr., affectionately known as "Oz", son of the late Leslie Ratliff and Sallie Belcher Ratliff was born July 8, 1923 in Premier, W.Va. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was reared in West Virginia and there attended the public schools.

Oz attended the Berwind Church of God in Berwind, W.Va., and on January 10, 1962 accepted Christ and became a saved follower. Blessed with the gift to play the guitar at the age of 13, he played for several gospel groups in Virginia and West Virginia.

He continued his Christian walk after moving to South Carolina in 1987, later joining the Green Acres Assembly of God in Sumter. He served faithfully for 21 years as a member of the Adult II Sunday School Class and played the lead guitar until his homegoing. Oz will be remembered for his singing of "Till the Storm Passes By" and "He Washed My Eyes with Tears". He loved Jesus with all of his heart and soul and loved reading his favorite scripture, the 23rd Psalm.

Oz was employed as a coal miner and retired from the U.S. Steel Corp after 28 1⁄2 years of service.

His hobbies included collecting and trading guitars and guns; hunting and fishing with his family and friends; traveling to and enjoying the mountains; sitting on his porch with his faithful companions (pets) Oscar and Kitty watching the Lord's handiwork in the clouds and lightning.

Devoted to his family, he loved to brag on his children. He was loved by all who knew him.

He was first married for fifty years to the late Juanita Atkinson Ratliff. This union was blessed with five children; three preceded him in death, Roscoe O. Ratliff Jr., Leslie Ratliff, and Paul Ratliff. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Dora Anderson, Louise Cartwright, and Lockey Cartwright; six brothers, Carl, Earnest, Ervine, Thurman, George, and Herman Ratliff; and a grandson, Oak Murdock.

He leaves to cherish his loving legacy a devoted wife of 13 years, Brenda Baker Ratliff of the home; two daughters, Lisa Paul of Sumter, and Kathy (Dan) Murdock of Climax, Ga.; one stepson, Brooky "Mark" (Jenni) Evans Jr., two stepdaughters, Tomilyn Evans and Amanda Kelly Evans of the home; one sister, Mabel Anderson of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Judy Ratliff of Dalzell; seven grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (today) at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Acres Assembly of God with the Rev. Donnie Collins and the Rev. Ronnie Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Winburn, Simon Winburn, Donnie Krages, Jack Chazen, and Chuck Bourgeois.

Honorary pallbearers will be Glenda Divine, Pam Coker, Sherrie Winburn, and members of the Adult II Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to Green Acres Assembly of God, 537 Lewis Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
