Bertha Irene Thornton Bliton, 94, of Madison, formerly of Canaan, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Wuesthoff Hospital in Melbourne, Fla.

She was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Canaan, the daughter of Charles and Grace Jackson Thornton. She was raised in the Canaan community and lived there for many years. She owned and operated with her husband and son the Canaan Grocery in Canaan in the 1950s. She was a member for over 50 years of Madison Chapter 530 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Indiana Kentuck Baptist Church near Canaan. She enjoyed playing cards with her Canaan friends, and loved the Canaan community and all of her friends there. She and her husband moved to Madison and lived there for a number of years. In 2002, she moved to Viera, Fla., to live with her son.

She is survived by one son, Gilbert Bliton of Viera, Fla.; one grandson; one granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and two special friends, David M. Lyon of Livonia, Mich., and Bruce L. Lyon of Canaan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Meredith W. Bliton, whom she married May 1, 1935, and who died in 1984; one infant son, Kenneth Rae Bliton, who died in 1946; her parents; two sisters, Mabel Waddle and Ivy Shook; and four brothers, Frank, Christie, Calvin and Kenneth Thornton.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
