Obituary, Chadwick Funeral and Cremation Service, New London, NH:

Richard "Dick" Clayton
August 26, 1938 - February 26, 2023

Richard R. Clayton, 84, beloved by his family and faithful follower of Jesus Christ
New London - Richard "Dick" Clayton passed through the shadow of death and entered into eternal life to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 26, 2023.

Dick was born in St. Louis, MO on August 26, 1938. The son of a pharmacist, he developed a strong work ethic from an early age as he worked behind the counter, made malts and hamburgers, and delivered prescriptions throughout St. Louis on his bike.

After graduation in 1956 from Beaumont High School, Dick headed off to Purdue University where he earned a B.S. degree in Industrial Economics in 1960. At Purdue, he served as President of his Fraternity, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, and was recognized as one of the top student leaders with his induction into The Order of Iron Key. It was also at Purdue that Dick met the love of his life, Leigh. They married in 1961 and shared 62 years of happiness and love together.

Dick's corporate career initially took him to La Crosse, WI to The Trane Company where he started in sales and quickly rose up the ranks to serve as Trane's Marketing Manager in France and Managing Director of Trane's Australian division. His career continued in the U.S. at SPS Technologies in Jenkintown, PA as Executive VP of Domestic Operations and then onto Vermont Castings in Randolph, VT as President and CEO. Dick finished his corporate career at Eastern Enterprises in Weston, MA as the President and COO. After much searching, Leigh and Dick made the decision to leave Concord, MA and move to Elkins, NH in 1994. He commuted weekly to Weston until he officially retired in 1998.

Dick and Leigh built a house on Pleasant Lake where all of their family could gather and enjoy each other and the beauty of New Hampshire. There are many fond memories of life on the lake and later from a new house atop the closed King Ridge Ski area.

Dick was active in retirement serving as President of The Outing Club board and as President of the Pleasant Lake Protective Association from 2002 to 2010. In 2012, the NH Lakes Association awarded him the John F. Morten Memorial Award for exemplary stewardship of the lakes and ponds of New Hampshire.
While Dick loved his volunteer work in the community, his greatest joys in retirement were his wife, family, and serving Jesus Christ in the local area and at church. He attended Wilmot Baptist Church where he led adult Sunday school, served as a Deacon, and taught several Alpha Courses which introduce the basics of Christian faith to those unfamiliar with Christianity.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, Lester and Gladys Clayton.

Dick's surviving family members include his wife Leigh; son Mark and his wife Kathy; daughter Cathy Erickson; daughter Christy Hume and her husband Rob Hume; grandson Tyler Erickson and his wife Amanda Erickson; granddaughter Erin Saunders and her husband Justin Saunders; grandson Ryan Clayton and his wife Jennifer Clayton; granddaughter Caleigh Saucier and her husband Cameron Saucier; granddaughter Katelyn Hume and grandson Jack Hume; great-grandchildren Royce Saunders, Titus Saunders and Adaline Saucier.

A memorial service will be held at Wilmot Baptist Church in Wilmot Flat, NH on June 4 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Allen Koop will officiate the ceremony. There will be no reception afterwards as the family will immediately proceed to a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice Care online (https://lakesunapeevna.org) or mailed to P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257. They provided professional and compassionate care throughout the last nine months of Dick's life.
