Rev. Bruce Brent Bixler was born in Pulaski, VA, on June 17, 1949, to Hersel Maurice and Mary Elizabeth (Fonde) Bixler. He lived there for 3½ years before moving to Daytona Beach, FL, where he attended school through the 10th grade. At that time, he moved with his family to Raleigh, NC, where he graduated from Broughton High School. He attended the East Carolina University where he played football for the university during the next three years.
He received his Associate's degree in Building Trades and Technology from Daytona Beach Community College, his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Rollins College in Orlando, and his Master's of Divinity from Texas Christian University. He was an ordained Disciple of Christ (Christian) minister and is a "Timothy" of First Christian Church of McKinney where he was ordained following TCU graduation.
He married Jane Bryce in 1986 in Houston. Together they raised Bruce's great nephew and niece, Brandenn (Chris) Bixler and Nicole Bixler. They have one grandson, Max.
Prior to being an ordained minister, Bruce worked in the Houston building trade for 10 years. Following receiving his divinity degree, Bruce served First Christian churches of Bonham TX, Stuttgart and Pine Bluff, AR. He was also chaplain for both Parkland and Methodist hospitals.
He is succeeded in death by his parents and all three brothers: Frank, Ray and James (Jimmy). He is survived by his wife, Jane; Chris and Nicole; his sister-in-law, Erika; very close nieces and nephews: Erich, Martha, Kathy, Anne, Lisa and Brent; and several great nephews and nieces.
He will be buried at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington with some of his remains being spread—at his request—in Daytona Beach. He loved surf fishing, scuba diving, and cruising the Caribbean.
Since his father was director of the Central Florida YMCA, during his childhood/teenage years he spent each summer at YMCA's Camp Winona. Being at camp for four months a year and experiencing lake fishing, boating, campfires and crafts was part of his wonderful memories. Another memory he had during the last few years and even through the many illnesses, was the pleasure he received from being with Max, his grandson, and watching him laugh, grow and simply enjoy life through the eyes of a three-year old.
One of Bruce's strengths was offering support to others during a time of need. If Bruce could advise anyone in these times, he passed along the saying "This too shall pass". It is with this saying that his strength is with us today.
What he left us was the ability to be spontaneous and savor each moment, love everyone as they are (strengths and weaknesses) and enjoy the moments spent with family members. He is forever in our hearts.
