Long time Juneau resident Darlene Elleanor "Dar" Smathers quietly passed away at home January 1st 2012. Born to Clarence and Ethel Wilson on March 19, 1932 in Sabina, OH where she grew up on the farm; graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in Accounting; married Robert E. "Bob" Smathers 7/25/1953 in Columbus, OH. The family moved to Juneau, AK in 1969. Dar was the Office Manager for Skinner's Ace Hardware and later worked for Alaska Payroll Division until retirement. She loved bowling and attended numerous National tournaments. She loved being around her family and extended family. Throughout the years many loved ones became her extended family. She was an extraordinary woman that touched many people's lives. She is survived by her son Brad (Judy) Smathers; daughters Debra Skoog; Amber (Dan) Vavalis all of Juneau; brother: Harold (Sue) Wilson; sisters: Marcella Miller; Justine Dewitt; Rosemary (Ron) Allmendinger; Betty Travis; Bonnie (Steve) Warehime; Geraldine and numerous nieces and nephews of OH, FL, CA and VA. Also numerous grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren that loved her as "Mur". Preceded in death by: parents Clarence and Ethel Wilson; brother Tommy Wilson; sisters Luella Wilson; Marjorie Smallridge and husband Robert E. "Bob" Smathers. Services will be at Chapel by the Lake at 11:30 AM on January 14, 2012. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to Cornerstone Home Health of Juneau.
