Michael Douglas Atkins, 74, of Black Mountain passed away September 10, 2023 at home.

Mr. Atkins was born April 23, 1949 in Buncombe County to the late Ruffner and Inez Ramsey Atkins.

Mike grew up in Black Mountain, attending Owen High School and later East Carolina University. He worked in Dallas, Texas and then Charlotte, NC until his retirement from Maersk in 2013. He moved back to Black Mountain in 2018. Mike had an infectious personality and was well liked by everyone he met. His quick wit and humor were his trademark. He had a caring heart and always looked to find ways to help others. He was a free spirit and marched to his own drum. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Larry and Jerry Atkins.

Left to cherish his memory is his aunt, Jean Ramsey; special friends, Sue Hattersley of Charlotte and Ron McMurray of Columbia; and several beloved cousins.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 21, 2023 in Mountain View Memorial Park.
