Gideon's father, Meshack Franklin was a very prominent North Carolina political leader who hailed from Surry County and continues to be a subject for discussion in Surry County, NC to this day. He was a noted local, state, and national political leader who contributed much to 19th-century culture and progress.

Recently a program on the life of Meshack Franklin was presented at the historic Edwards-Franklin House by their local historian, and expert on Franklin, Rodney Pell.

The local libraries, colleges, and museums in that area also have an extensive collection on the Franklin family, and their genealogy if anyone is interested in doing more research.

The story is that Gideon, and his family were plantation owners, and farmers. Because of this Gideon moved to Mississippi for the rich new farm land which hadn't been farmed as long as his acreage in NC, if at all. His wife went with him of course. I don't know if any of his other family members went with him. I'm assuming he had more than one child.

The Edwards-Franklin House was built in 1799 by Meekey's father, and Edward's grandfather, Cpt. Gideon Edwards (1751-1810). He was the famous builder of the Edwards-Franklin House which is now a historical landmark. He was Gideon Edwards Franklin's (1803-1867) maternal grandfather, who Gideon Edward Franklin was named after.

This historic house is located at 4132 Haystack Road, West of Mount Airy, in Surry County, North Carolina. The Surry County Historical Society bought the Edwards-Franklin House in 1972, and restored the structure to its grandeur. The house features many unique, and interesting architectural components, and it is open to the public to visit. If you plan to visit this house - call the Surry County Historical Society before you go just to find out when they will be open. Their hours can vary. For out of towners that make an appointment, they will open up the doors for you to go in, and have a tour with one of their volunteers.

This house also has it's own burial grounds where Gideon's parents, Meshack, and his wife, Meekey are laid to rest. There is a road between the house, and the cemetery. You have to cross the road to get on the trail that leads to the cemetery.

This memorial is a work in progress. I'm not done with it yet. I am still trying to find out where Gideon, and his wife Sarah are buried, and to find out more info. about them, and their daughter, Mary Ellen (Franklin) Evans.
