Obituary (From the Berg Mortuary website):

Nelda Jean Gammell Ratcliffe, age 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones on October 8, 2022, from the results of Parkinson's. Nelda was born November 13, 1930, the daughter of Horace Blake Gammell and Emma Marie Busby. She had one little sister, Nancy, with whom she was really close to her entire life and who loved and looked up to Nelda immensely. Nelda also had 2 older half-brothers, Allen and Raymond who loved their little sisters and were very protective of them. Nelda grew up in Provo and attended Timpanogos Elementary School, Dixon Junior High School, and Provo High School and was an exceptionally good student being quiet, studious, and attentive to her instructors. Her little sister Nancy jokingly has said that some of those teachers she hated while growing up because they would always ask why Nancy could not be just like her older sister. Music was a big part of Nelda's life. While in her youth Nelda was a member of a singing group called the "Teenettes," a youth group who would perform at various church meetings and other special occasions. She was the group's accompanist as well as sang with the group occasionally when singing A Capella. Her love for music was also shared by her 2 half-brothers and her dad, and while growing up the entire family spent time singing together in their home while Nelda would often play the piano for them as the accompanist. While growing up she worked at University Dairies waiting on customers. Later she went to work for Dixon Taylor Russell store (DTRS) doing accounting work.Nelda had several interests and hobbies besides music. Those included quilting, knitting, crocheting, and doing tatting work. She loved to make handmade Christmas cards using some of those skills, as well as making beautiful handbags out of plastic bag strips as well as dish clothes and dish rags to give away to loved ones and strangers alike. Clear up until her death she was trying to make beautiful gifts for those she loved, even despite her shaking hands. Her husband's love of nature photography also became her passion, and she could be found with him traveling to the far reaches of many beautiful places taking gorgeous photos of many of God's greatest creations, both in the mountains and the desert. One of her and her husband's favorite places to visit was in Death Valley, California where picturesque landscapes, beautiful wildflowers and wildlife were photographed. She loved Bill and the two of them spent many hours together enjoying the natural wonders of this world together. Without doubt her greatest treasures and joy evolved around her grandchildren. She once was quoted as saying that she loved her grandchildren more than life itself. Her primary passion was family and she radiated pureness and love. People who were around her for even a brief time would comment that there was something special and sweet about Nelda. Nelda was preceded in death by her husband, 3 sons and 1 grandchild. She is survived by 1 son, 3 daughters-in law, 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022 in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center Street, Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:50 a.m. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
