From Obit: With deep gratitude for a remarkable life, we are saddened to announce the death of Ona-Lea --Mary Ruth Mustonen on Wednesday , June 21. She was born in Long Beach, CA on January 15, 1942. She was predeceased by her parents louElla Jordan and Arvo Wilhelm Mustonen, aunts, uncles and extended family.
She is survived by her sister Leane Ross her nephews Blayne Ross, Trevor (Heather) Ross and niece Blair Ross Kernan (Chris), great nieces Samantha Kernan and Madison Ross and great nephews Noah Ross and William Kernan as well as many cousins. She is also survived by her dear friend Ann Barta, her Audire family, friends and her Benedictine and Sacred Heart communities.
Ona Lea graduated from the University of Florida in the field of Medical Technology. After graduation, she opened the first private clinical laboratory in Gainesville, FL. It was at this time that her search for God began. This search took her to Alaska, Seattle, Conception Abbey, Bar Harbor and finally a pilgrimage to Europe and Israel where she ultimately entered the Benedictine community of Abu Gosh. She made final profession in 1991. She who was summoned by Love at an early age attempted to respond to Love by listening with "the ear of her heart", following what was asked of her. The searching and listening had her discover that what she was seeking was already within.
While spending some time in the States, she realized her elderly mother needed additional assistance. While being more available to her mother, she was also led into senior ministry within the Diocese of St. Augustine at the Casa San Pedro. She became certified in spiritual gerontology which then led her to the Audire program for Spiritual Direction. The first word in the Rule of St. Benedict is "listen". The word Audire in Latin is also "listen". Ona Lea spent the last eleven years listening to the journeys of others and helping them to discover that which they sought was already within.
Other life-giving activities in her life included camping, fishing, biking, reading and surrounding herself in nature, the first testament.
We are filled with gratitude for those who cared for her at Community Hospice as well as for Valerie Mastin who loved, challenged and helped her in so many ways.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on July 1, 2023 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. the church is located at 7190 Highway 17, Fleming Island, FL 32003.
