Benjamin Clark Adams graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1938. He wanted to be a Navy pilot but couldn't because of his eyesight. He served as a gunnery officer on the USS Arizona until 1940 when he left the U.S. Navy

A staunch, fiscally conservative Republican, Mr. Adams served four terms as a New Hampshire state senator during the 1950s. He was appointed commissioner of the New Hampshire Employment Security Division in 1961 by then-Governor Wesley Powell. Mr. Adams also served as chairman of the Derry Board of Selectmen and of the Planning Board during the 1970s and early 1980s. He co-founded the Derry Taxpayers Association with former Derry Mayor May Casten and former Derry District Court Judge George Grinnell.

Thought he couldn't fly for the U.S. Navy, Mr. Adams did learn to fly and owned several Cessnas over time.

Benjamin Adams was related to former U.S. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
