1. Drafted at the stated age of nineteen in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1863. He is in the company register as "Spindle."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Chambersburg February 8, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 14 as a private with Co. D, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1865. He is in the company register as "Spidle."
He married Elizabeth M. lnu. and fathered Annie M. (b. @1866), Charles E. (b. @1870), Harry A. (b. @1872), and John H. C. (b. @1879). In 1870, he was living in Quincy Township, Franklin County, but lived the final years of his life in Reading, Berks County, where he died at his home following a reported stroke.
His brother Abram, also a veteran, spelled his surname "Spidle."
