Her mother Fanny Augusta Matilda Smith (nee Bird, born on Ascension Island) passed away in 1894 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Fanny was divorced from Nina's father when she died and had remarried.
Nina married Englishman Reginald Pole Garrett, a trader, in Kimberley on the 3rd of June 1908 at St. Augustine's Anglican Church.
