Claude Bell was a student at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Staunton and was killed by a Southern passenger train near New Market during a Saturday afternoon, March 19, 1927. He was facing the approaching train, but is thought to have been blinded at the time by the terrific rain and hailstorm. Bell, a mute, left the school Saturday morning and was thought to be walking to see his beloved sister, Pearl, who lived in Washington, D.C.
