Nellie Laidlaw Clifford was born and educated in Oxbow NY, but after her marriage to George Clifford in 1896 they set up residence in Gouverneur where her husband ran a plumbing business. In 1919, they moved again, this time to Carthage NY where they took up farming until George's death in 1942. After his death, Nellie lived with her sons.
She was survived by two sons, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a half-brother and three half-sisters
