Thomas Trotter was a silver and goldsmith and jeweler. He was a son of Dr. Thomas Trotter, of Nasemond County, Virginia. He was apprenticed as a silversmith in Salisbury at the age of 18, and opened a silver shop in Greensboro, NC in the early 1820s. He came to Charlotte, NC in 1824.

He first married Margaret Graham (1810-1847) in 1828. The children of Thomas Trotter and Margaret Graham were: William Pinkney Trotter (1833-1857), Nina Catherine Trotter (c.1835-1891, m. George Byron Hanna), Thomas B. Trotter (1839-1864, CSA soldier), Alexander G. (probably Graham) Trotter (1844-1914, CSA soldier), Joshua J. Trotter (1847-1865, CSA soldier).

In 1850, Thomas Trotter married Jane Elizabeth Brown. Their children were Rufus Brown Trotter (1851-1926), Millard Fillmore Trotter (1854-1931), Dr. Robert Walter Trotter (1855-1925) and P. C. Trotter (c. 1858-?, a daughter).
