John was born to Job Westfall and Hannah Marshall in present Beverly, West Virginia on June 12, 1794. In 1795, his sixty year old grandfather William Sr. left Beverly for Clark County, Kentucky. With him were all of his children except William Jr., who had married and would stay in Beverly. With William Sr. was his son Job and Job's one year old son John. Also with William Sr. was his forty-eight year old brother James Sr. and his family.

Ohio was the home of numerous Indian tribes but on August 20, 1794, General Anthony Wayne defeated them at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Per treaty in 1775, the Ohio Indians gave up most of Ohio. In 1798, the William Sr. and James Sr. clan moved north to Ohio and settled along the Greene and Montgomery County border, where Dayton Ohio in Montgomery County and the present Dayton suburb of Beaver Creek Greene County now exists. James Sr. died in December 1800 and William Sr. died in 1821. Job's son John grew up in Beaver Creek and served as a private in the 1812 War with Britain. Also serving as a private in the 1812 War was James Sr. son John, who was born in Clark County, Kentucky on August 8, 1795. (FAG memorial 51335101). These two John's are often confused with each other as born one year apart and lived close to each other but one was born in VA(WV) and the other in KY.

John was age twenty-one when he married Mrs. Maria[Schnepp] Weaver in Greene County on April 28, 1816. They had:
1) Eli H in 1817
2) Isaac Newton in 1818
3) Hannah on 15 Jun 1819
4) Susan in 1822
5) John A in 1826
6) Simon P in 1829

Wife Maria died on May 8, 1856 and John wed Almira Lawhead in about 1859 as Maria died in 1856 and John is shown with Almira in 1860 census. John died in 1876 and Almira in 1880 and both were buried in Hawker Cemetery.

Note: John's son Eli noted as born in 1815 in census records but believe 1817 based on John's marriage date.
