Lillie was born to: James Asbury Clayton and Marietta Celestia Crook. She married: John Samuel Kennedy 07/06/1907 in Cedar Co., MO where they lived their entire married lives. They had four daughters: Wilma Celestial, Hazel Bernice, Norma Ethel and Mildred Irene. They dedicated the last twelve years of marriage providing a loving home to Norma's four children: Constance Joyce, Marjorie Lea, Charles Clayton and Norma Jean after her untimely death due to tuberculosis. Lillie found her lifelong companion, John in Arnica which was about a mile from her family's home. Her grand-daughter Marjorie remembers reading one of Lillie's "love letters" from John where he wrote,"If you don't marry me I'll either kill myself or go to Texas." She was struck by lightning at the age of 15 and the family thought she was dead, at which time her sister Seffie was killed. The lightning left a mark on Lillie's back and may have affected her health. At the age of 65 she had surgery in Chicago, IL for her cancer which required a colostomy. Expecting to live less than one year, she lived five more years suffering much pain. After her own daughters, her passion must have been caring for her daughter Norma's four children. Lillie was well educated by her parents and a good money manager. She canned, cooked, sewed and everything necessary to provide for her family.
