Melvin was united in marriage to Fern May Oxtoby on July 1, 1938 at Aberdeen, South Dakota. The couple lived and farmed southeast of Oakes, before moving into Oakes in 1943. While working for the WPA (Works Project Administration), he helped build the old swimming pool, breaking big rocks up for the floor of the pool. Melvin worked at the Oakes Nursery, North American Creamery, Pfaffs International Company, and Visto's Implement and Parts Supply Store, where he was working at the time of his retirement in 1978.
The most important thing to Melvin was his family; he loved to be around his wife, children, and grandchildren. All of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved to sit on Grandpa Melvin's lap and listen to stories. He was known for his great sense of humor.
Melvin was an avid hunter and fisherman and the fish were always biting. He appreciated the rich dark soil of the Dakotas and always had a huge garden.
