John Allen Driver was born on a plantation within 12 miles of Troy, Alabama. He moved to Nacogdoches County, Texas as a young man.
At Nacogdoches County, Texas, John Allen Driver married Wealthy Josephine Owen on 22 August 1869 at the home of her parents officiated by Elder J.J. Roundtree. In 1874, the couple moved near Weatherford in Parker county living there for a year. In 1875, the couple moved their family to Young County, Texas. When reaching Graham, they camped at Shawnee Springs, then made their way to Bunger trading their team and horses for 160 acrs of land.
John and Wealthy worked hard for 46 years, then in 1921, oil was discovered on their property changint their lives for ever. In 1923, John Allen Driver bought a home in Graham and began construction of the Driver Hotel which was completed in 1924. This hotel stood at the northeast corner of the Graham Square for over 50 years until it was torn down. The hotel housed a restaurant, barber shop, pool hall, newstand and bowling alley.
John Allen Driver was instumental in establishing and building the Oak Street Baptist Church building and contributed to the building of Memorial Auditorium. In 1929, John Allen Driver owned a Cadillac, but never learned to drive. He was always driven by his son, Henry Driver. It was a normal day in Graham to see John Driver, with his flowing white beard, walking the streets with his hands held behind his back.
