Rick "Blades" Davis
July 23, 1947 - August 26, 2023

Rick "Blades" Davis,76, of Sweetwater passed away Saturday, August 26, 2023.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday September 2, 2023 at Lamar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Vic Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Rick was born July 23, 1947 in Seymour, Texas to Garland and Dolores (Cox) Davis. He married Patty Armstrong on June 22, 1985 in Sweetwater Texas. Rick was a graduate of Bridgeport High School and a graduate of the University of Texas-Arlington, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history. He did his graduate work at what is now the University of North Texas.

Rick became a licensed athletic trainer in Texas in 1972, a year after it became the first state to enact a law requiring athletic trainers to meet specific standards of education, professionalism, and ethics. He worked at schools in Grand Prairie, Arlington and Bridgeport before coming to Sweetwater to work for W.T. Stapler, who as the football coach led the school to its only state championship just three years after Rick was hired in 1982.

In the last 40 years, he has gotten considerable statewide recognition. Rick was given the Eddie Wojecki Award in 1991 by the Southwest Trainers Association for his contributions. Five years later he was nominated by the Texas High School Coaches Association as athletic trainer of the year, an honor that he would eventually win in 2006. A year later, Rick was head trainer for the North team at the Texas High School Coaches Association all-star game. He won the Everett Blackburn Memorial Award in 2012, which was created in recognition of outstanding and unselfish giving of time and talents to serve and improve others and the athletic training profession.

In 2012, Rick took his talents to Blackwell CISD which has had quite a bit of athletic success the past 10 years while he was there. He reluctantly made the decision to retire in 2022, with 50 years as an athletic trainer after being diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Rick is survived by his wife, Patty; brothers-in-law, Terry Armstrong of Sweetwater, Gary Armstrong and wife Zela of Bangs and Rick Armstrong of Alexander, Arkansas; nieces, Staci Tatro (Dustin) and Alex Trahan (Brent) of Abilene, Duania Nash (Ronnie) of Joshua, Saundra Whitener (Derek) of Runaway Bay; nephew, Bo Armstrong (Rachael) of Little Rock, Arkansas; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Dolores Davis; brother Floyd Davis; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joyce and Bill Armstrong.

Pallbearers are Dustin Tatro, Brent Trahan, Bo Armstrong, Doug Bowyer, Brook Burnett and Shea Burnett. Honorary pallbearers are Rick Armstrong, Terry Armstrong, Gary Armstrong and Randy Feagan.

Rick was a volunteer fireman, so memorials may be made to Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department. P. O. Box 604, Sweetwater, Texas 79556.
