Betty Lou Henss, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Illinois, at the age of 88. Betty lived in Normal for the past 55 years. Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church, Normal, with the Rev. Desmond Francis officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.

Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, Illinois is in charge of arrangements.

Betty was born in Chicago, Illinois to Francis Russell and Helen Fox Henss. Betty was the first of four children. The family worked hard to make it through the Great Depression. In summer, family life extended to Wayland, Iowa where Betty rode the train from Chicago alone to spend many summers with a grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Betty's parents and two brothers, Russell and Phillip Henss, preceded her in death. Betty is survived by her sister, Ann Wolkey, and sister-in-law, Anne Henss.

Betty graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago in 1945. She attended Drury College in Springfield, Missouri and began a lifelong connection there with the Kappa Delta sorority.

Betty married Dr. Charles Rennie Hicklin in 1948. Many years of marriage brought five children: daughters Claudia Kaufman (Gary), Celia Hicklin (Tony Combs) and Claire Fox (Greg Jarczynski) and, son, Charles Russell Hicklin (Laura). The family lost Betty's eldest daughter, Cynthia Wolin, in 2009. Betty is also survived by her son-in-law, Harry Wolin (Karen).

Betty met her husband William ("Bill") Lund as a "Pen Pal". Bill retired from his work with the Southern Pacific Railroad in southern California and in 1982, Betty and Bill were married in Normal. Betty lost Bill in 1988.

Betty's great love for family included her first five grandchildren: Sarah Mackey (Brant), Betsy Wolin, Daniel Kaufman, Charles A. and Calvin Hicklin. In December 2014, Betty joyously celebrated the birth of her sixth grandchild, a granddaughter, Cora Hicklin. Betty also welcomed step-grandson Gregg Jarczynski and step-great-granddaughter Samantha Mackey into her family.

Betty always reached out to her community to see how she could help others. For close to twenty-five years, she put her spirit into her employment with the local Girl Scout council in Bloomington. After her 1992 retirement, Betty volunteered at a Bloomington thrift shop. In time, Betty found her opportunity to help the Normal Public Library as a volunteer. Betty helped grow and strengthen the library's community-wide book sales of used and donated books so the sales better served as a library funding source.
