Alanson R. Piper enlisted as a Private in Company B of the Fourth Michigan Infantry on June 20 1861, at Adrian, Michigan for 3 years service, at age 18. He was promoted to Corporal on July 1, 1863 and re-enlisted on December 29, 1863. Alanson was wounded in action (gunshot wound to arm) at Spotsylvania Court House on May 10, 1864. He was on detached service with company B. First Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia and then transferred to company D, Fourth Infantry, July 1, 1865. Alanson was promoted to Sergeant on July 1 , 1865 and mustered out of service at San Antonio, Texas, on March 13, 1866.

Alanson Robert Piper, son of Asa Piper and Abigail P. (Cornell) Piper, was born February 17, 1843 in Palmyra Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. He married Sarah E. Wilcox, daughter of Isaac Wilcox and Emaline Rappleye, on 17 January 1869 in Blissfield Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. George Wilcox attended. He died on October 30, 1913 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He was buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
