Jennie E. Askey was married to Joseph L. Morlan on Dec. 4, 1862 in LaGrange Co., IN.

Joseph L. Morlan was born in 1834 in Columbiana Co., Ohio. Joseph is the son of Joseph Morlan, Jr. and Myalmay Jane "Alma" Hayes.

According to an obiturary for Joseph L. Morlan, published 29 Aug 1878 in the Waterloo Press, it said that Joseph grew to manhood in Columbiana county, Ohio, teaching school and studying law. About 1859 he moved to LaGrange, LaGrange Co., IN, where he was a deputy county clerk. During the rebellion (Civil War), he was a clerk in the office of the state Supreme Court and in the Governor's office, in Indianapolis. After leaving Indianapolis, he resided for a short time in Ft. Wayne and in LaGrange, then moved to Waterloo, DeKalb county, Indiana. There, he became Prosecuting Attorney for two terms.

In 1879, Jennie moved, with her five children, to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

Jennie was a daughter and only child of Thomas Askey (b. PA) and his wife Betsy Robinson (b. Mass.)



Jennie Morlan, 95, Ohio Native, Dies

Funeral of Mrs. H. E. Ralston's Mother Will be Held Tuesday

Death claimed another of Kalamazoo's pioneers Tuesday night when Mrs. Jennie E, Morlan, 95, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. H. E. Ralston, 717 West South Street, where she had lived for the last 20 years.

Mrs. Morlan was born July 12, 1839, in Republic, [Seneca Co.] Ohio. In 1861 [Dec. 4, 1862 in LaGrange Co.] she married Joseph L. Morlan, attorney, and they moved to Waterloo, Indiana, where Mr. Morlan died in 1878. The next year Mrs. Morlan, with her five children, moved to Kalamazoo, where she since has made her home. Four of her five children preceded Mrs. Morlan in death.

ACCOMPLISHED MUSICIAN

For a number of years the deceased was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church where she was active in church affairs. She was an accomplished musician, her piano improvisations being a pleasure to all. She was adept at sewing, and until a few weeks ago did all her own sewing. She was widely read, her eyesight remaining unimpaired to the end.

FUNERAL THURSDAY

Surviving, besides the daughter, Mrs. Ralston, are one son-in-law, U. G. Grandbois; nine grandchildren: Mrs. Harvey M. Stewart, Mrs. Merrill B. King, Mrs. Howard C. Bush, Cameron L. Davis, Morlan J. Grandbois and Ralph M. Ralston of Kalamazoo, Gordon W. Davis and Mrs. Robert F. Baxter of Detroit, and Lowell A. Morlan of Denver. Thirteen great grandchildren also survive

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Thomas Laity, will be held at 4 Thursday afternoon at the Truesdale chapel, with burial in Riverside. Pallbearers will be six grandsons.
