Mrs. Candace S. Lewis.
Mrs. Candace S. Lewis, widow of Hiram Lewis, who died October 31, 1878, passed away Sunday morning at 1 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. S. Peck. 719 south West street. Mrs. Lewis' home had been with her daughter, Mrs. George B. Davis, but she was visiting Mrs. Peck when she was taken ill a few days ago with pneumonia. Candace S. Leland was born in Grafton, Mass., November 3, 1812. She was married July 16, 1835. In 1836 she and her husband came to Prairieville. In the fall of 1868, they removed to Kalamazoo township, residing northeast of the city on their farm until after Mr. Lewis' death. Since that time Mrs. Lewis had resided with her daughters. She was an earnest member of the First Presbyterian church. Of the nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, six survive, as follows: Charles E., who resides east of the city; Mrs. E. S. Brown, Mrs. C. S. Peck. Mrs. G. R Davis, all of this city; Mrs. William E. Stisch, of Palo, Kas.; Hiram E. Lewis, South Haven. The funeral will be held at the residence of Mrs. Davis Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Kev. John Gray, D. D., will officiate. Miss Katherine Jones will sing.
